Shopping at Vietnamese Markets
Vietnamese markets — from the chaotic wet markets of Ho Chi Minh City to the atmospheric night market of Hội An — are one of the great pleasures of travel in Vietnam. They are also one of the situations where knowing some Vietnamese makes the biggest difference. Vendors appreciate the effort, prices often drop, and the whole experience becomes more genuine when you can communicate beyond pointing and gesticulating.

Bargaining Culture in Vietnam
Bargaining is expected and respected at most Vietnamese markets — but not everywhere. Department stores, supermarkets and shops with fixed price signs (giá cố định) do not bargain. Traditional markets, street vendors, tourist shops and informal stalls are fair game. A good rule: if there's no price tag, the price is negotiable.
The best approach is to stay friendly, laugh a lot and be willing to walk away. Walking away is often the most effective bargaining technique — vendors frequently call you back with a better price. Never bargain aggressively or angrily; in Vietnamese culture, maintaining good humour throughout is part of the ritual.
chợ (choh) = market · chợ đêm = night market · chợ ướt = wet market (fresh produce) · giá cố định = fixed price · mặc cả = to bargain · trả giá = to negotiate price
